Support Your Immune System as a Frequent Flyer

Support Your Immune System as a Frequent Flyer

More and more studies are showing that frequent flying can weaken your immune system. This means that the worlds most frequent flyers aircrew, international business executives and diplomats are subject to a higher risk of contracting both short term illnesses and chronic diseases.

When you frequently travel across continents and time-zones with no regular sleep pattern your body’s natural equilibrium is disrupted. This constant disruption affects your circadian rhythm, which can weaken your immune system. Frequent changes in temperatures and climates is also believed to have a negative impact our metabolic processes and our immune system along with changes in air pressure, which can put a strain on our oxygen levels and blood flow. Our ability to resist infection is affected by the dehydrated, moisture-free conditions in the cabin causing the mucous lining of our noses to dry out, weakening their ability to trap pathogens and prevent illness. Of course there is also the regular disruption to our eating cycle and lack of nutritious food available in-flight which can also affect our immune system.

But of course if you are a frequent flyer you may say, I have no choice but to fly. So how can you support your immune system if this is the case. Here at Neomed Institute we believe in both a preventative and reactive approach to your health and wellbeing. Here are some of our suggestions to support your immune system while flying.

Prior to Flights

  • Increase your water intake on the days prior to your flight.

  • Try to eat only fresh, whole-food, highly nutritious meals on the days prior to your flight to make up for the lack of during the flight.

  • Take a daily dose of Liposomal Vitamin C, Zinc, B-Complex, Vitamin E and beta-carotene (natural vitamin A), all of which help boost your immune system.

  • Take a daily dose of doTERRA OnGuard Protective Blend Softgels as these contain a powerful immune boosting blend of essential oils.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine on the day prior to your flight.

During the Flight

  • Studies have shown you are less likely to catch colds if you sit on an aisle or window seat so choose seat carefully. Try to get an empty row if possible.

  • Carry a sanitizing spray with you on flights and immediately clean your tray table and armrests when you sit down. Use this on all toilet visits also.

  • Drink water every 30 mins on board and no alcohol.

  • Take several doses of Liposomal Vitamin C (for example, one dose every hour of the flight) and an extra On Guard Softgel on board the flight.

  • Carry doTERRA On Guard Touch Roller Blend with you and apply to pulse points on wrists, behind ears and lymph nodes on neck periodically throughout flight.

  • If you can bring food on the plane with you bring some fruit or a salad not processed or packaged items.

  • Get up and walk around the plane as much as possible.

  • Try and get some sleep rather than using digital devices if possible.

  • Carry a saline spray with you and use throughout flight to keep your airways moist and open.
