What is Aerotoxic Syndrome?

Aerotoxic Syndrome is a relatively new term that was coined to describe an illness caused by exposure to contaminated air in jet aircrafts.

An aircraft’s ECS (Environmental Control System) system controls the circulation of cabin air to ensure a constant supply of clean air and to pressurise the cabin. Unfortunately substances used in the maintenance and treatment of aircraft, including aviation engine oil, hydraulic fluid, cleaning compounds and de-icing fluids, can sometimes contaminate the ECS. Air crew, ground staff and passengers themselves can also contaminate the air supply with carbon dioxide, pesticides, bioeffluents, viruses, bacteria, allergens, and fungal spores. Off-gassing from interior material and cleaning agents used on the plane can also affect the air supply.

When an individual is exposed to contaminated cabin air, it can cause both short and long term health issues. Unfortunately those who are frequent flyers such as Air Crew are more at risk of long term health issues from a build up of exposure to toxic air.

According to Aerotoxic Association

“Those who have been subject to toxic oil exposure and CO fumes normally complain of headaches, breathing difficulties, muscle aching and exhaustion, symptoms that appear first and fast. Many suffer full Aerotoxic Syndrome symptoms after repeated exposures to such toxic chemical substances/mixtures that attack the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS controls all of the major organs in the body; symptoms are mainly neurological but are many and varied. Aerotoxic Syndrome is frequently misdiagnosed and mistreated by doctors unfamiliar with a hidden cause of poisonings, which results in patients being falsely treated with i.e. anti-depressants, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and other drugs.”

Here at Neomed Institute in Cyprus we have developed a program specifically designed for Air Crew or frequent flyers that concentrates on regeneration, oxygenation and detoxification of the body after long stressful flights. Utilising our unique holistic approach combined with biological medicine our program targets the build-up of toxins in the body to help alleviate some of the debilitating symptoms. Individuals who feel they may be suffering from Aerotoxic Syndrome or other flying related illness are welcome to partake of our Air Crew Wellness Program which we tailor according to your specific needs and symptoms.
