Omega – 3 and You

07/07/2025

Omega-3 fatty acids are vital nutrients, obtained from food or supplements, that help build and maintain a healthy body.

As well as being a great source of energy, omega-3s play a pivotal role in the structure of our cell walls. They also keep the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and immune system in working order.

The incredible health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids include:

  • A decreased risk of heart disease. High triglyceride levels – a type of fat called lipid that circulates in the blood – can increase the risk of heart disease and strokes. Fish oil is known to lower triglyceride levels;
  • Easing joint pain. Fish oil not only helps with rheumatoid arthritis it also boosts the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs;
  • Reducing asthma risk by lowering inflammation. Inflammation causes the inner lining of the airways to swell and produce mucus;
  • Reduced ADHD symptoms. Studies have shown that fish oil has helped some ADHD children improve their ability to think, remember, and learn;
  • Increased protection against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia;
  • Aiding child development. Omega-3s are important for the visual and neurological development of infants;
  • Helping with depression. Cultures that typically eat food high in omega-3s have lower levels of depression.

Two of the most important omega-3s are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both are primarily found in certain varieties of fish. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), is another omega-3 that can be found in plant sources such as nuts and seeds.

Good sources of EPA and DHA include:

  • Anchovies
  • Herring
  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Lake trout
  • Tuna

While eating fatty fish is a good source of omega-3, some fish may have higher levels of mercury, so stick to wild trout and wild salmon if you can.

Good food sources of ALA are:

  • Walnuts
  • Flaxseed and flaxseed oil
  • Canola oil
  • Soybean oil
  • Chia seeds
